Simparica Trio is sold in both Australia and the United States, but each country registers the product with its own label. The two labels list different tick species. Smartway Pet Supplies sells Australian-registered Simparica Trio, so the Australian label is the one that applies to the chews we supply.
This guide compares the two labels species by species, so you can decide whether Simparica Trio fits the ticks found where you live.
Tick species on each label
| Tick (scientific name) | Where it matters most | Australian label | US label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) | Worldwide | Yes | Yes |
| Asian longhorned tick, called the bush tick in Australia (Haemaphysalis longicornis) | Australia; spreading in the eastern US | Yes | Yes |
| Paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) | Eastern Australia | Yes | No |
| Lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) | Southern, eastern and central US | No | Yes |
| Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum) | Southern US | No | Yes |
| American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) | Eastern and central US | No | Yes |
| Black-legged or deer tick (Ixodes scapularis) | Eastern and upper Midwest US | No | Yes |
The US label also includes prevention of Borrelia burgdorferi infection (the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease) as a direct result of killing black-legged ticks. The Australian label makes no Lyme disease claim.
Why the labels are different
A product label lists the parasites a regulator has registered that product for in that country. Manufacturers register claims for the parasites that matter in each market, which is why the Australian label includes the paralysis tick and the US label includes ticks common in North America.
If a tick species is not on a label, that label makes no claim either way about it. It does not mean the product was tested and failed. It means you should not rely on that label for protection against that species.
What else differs between the labels
Both labels cover fleas, heartworm disease prevention, roundworms and hookworms, for dogs and puppies from 8 weeks of age weighing at least 2.8 lbs (1.25 kg). Beyond ticks, the main differences are:
- The Australian label also covers demodectic and sarcoptic mange and ear mites.
- The US label also includes prevention of flea tapeworm infection by killing the fleas that carry it.
What this means for your dog
- If brown dog ticks or Asian longhorned ticks are your main concern, both labels list them.
- If you live where lone star, American dog, Gulf Coast or deer ticks are common, the Australian label does not list those species. Talk to your veterinarian about tick protection labeled for the ticks in your area, especially if Lyme disease is a risk where you live.
- For fleas, heartworm and intestinal worms, both labels give the same core coverage in one monthly chew.
Frequently asked questions

The Australian label. All Simparica Trio we sell is Australian-registered stock.
Does Australian Simparica Trio protect against Lyme disease?
The Australian label makes no Lyme disease claim, and it does not list the black-legged (deer) tick that spreads Lyme disease in the US.
How quickly does Simparica Trio kill fleas and ticks?
The Australian label states it starts killing fleas within 4 to 8 hours of dosing and kills existing paralysis tick infestations within 24 hours. See How Long Does Simparica Trio Take to Work? for more detail.
