How It Works
Ivermectin prevents heartworm larvae from maturing into adult worms, while pyrantel pamoate paralyzes and expels roundworms and hookworms from the intestine. Give one chew monthly, year-round, for continuous heartworm prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Heartgard Plus protect against fleas or ticks?
No — Heartgard Plus is formulated for heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm control only. If you also need flea and tick coverage, consider NexGard or Simparica Trio alongside it. Or, if you'd rather cover everything — heartworm, worms, fleas, and ticks — in a single monthly chew instead of two separate products, see NexGard Spectra.
What happens if my dog has an undetected heartworm infection?
Giving a preventative to a dog already infected with adult heartworms can cause a serious reaction. Have your dog tested before starting Heartgard Plus if their heartworm status isn't current.
What if I miss a monthly dose?
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember, then resume your regular monthly schedule. Consistent, on-time dosing is what keeps heartworm prevention effective.
What's the difference between Heartgard and Heartgard Plus?
Original Heartgard contains ivermectin alone and only prevents heartworm. Heartgard Plus adds pyrantel pamoate, which extends protection to roundworms and hookworms as well — it's the version most vets recommend by default.
Does Heartgard Plus kill tapeworms?
No — tapeworms require a separate wormer. If you want broader intestinal coverage in one product, NexGard Spectra includes tapeworm treatment alongside heartworm and flea/tick prevention.
Is Heartgard Plus safe for dogs?
Yes, for the large majority of dogs, including puppies from 6 weeks and pregnant or nursing females. Collies, Australian Shepherds, and other MDR1-affected herding breeds can be more sensitive to ivermectin, so check with your vet if your dog carries that mutation.
