Frequently Asked Questions
What is Seresto™?
Seresto™ is an innovative, odourless, water-resistant* collar, and the convenient way to provide your dog with safe long-lasting protection against fleas, ticks, and tick-borne diseases.
How do Seresto™ collars for dogs work?
1. Active ingredients (actives) are integrated into Seresto™'s innovative polymer matrix.
2. Low doses of these actives are released from the matrix over time, as needed, and migrate into the lipid (fatty/oily) layer of your dog's skin and hair.
3. Actives are very minimally absorbed through the skin, but remain within the naturally water-resistant lipid layer of the skin and hair - so your dog can still enjoy the water.*
4. The actives in the skin and hair of your dog kill fleas and ticks on contact, no biting required.
5. The hair and dead skin that your dog sheds naturally each day contain small amounts of the active ingredient, imidacloprid, killing flea larvae in your dog's surroundings.
6. As actives are depleted from your dog's skin and hair, they will be quickly replenished from the collar matrix - ensuring consistent, long-lasting protection from fleas and ticks.
What makes Seresto™ different from other flea and tick collars?
Seresto™’s innovative technology enables it to release controlled doses of the active ingredients over prolonged periods. The ingredients are transferred to your pet’s skin and fur, and spread across their entire body, keeping your dog protected from paralysis ticks for 8 months, bush and brown dog ticks for 4 months. Seresto™ has also overcome the challenges of conventional flea or tick collars, to be water-resistant* and odourless.
*See product label.
Why am I still seeing a tick on my dog when he’s wearing a Seresto™ collar?
Ticks may still arrive on your dog when they are wearing a Seresto™ collar. However, the active ingredient, flumethrin, works on contact, which means the tick does not need to attach and take a blood meal to be killed. Once they have arrived on your dog, ticks will be rapidly affected by flumethrin and will fall off and die.
Ticks already on your dog prior to fitting Seresto™ may not be killed immediately after collar application and may remain attached and visible. Therefore, removal of ticks already on your dog at the time of application is recommended.
The Paralysis tick is a potentially deadly parasite and difficult to control. While Seresto™ kills paralysis ticks for 8 months and repels them for 4 months, the risk of tick paralysis cannot be entirely eliminated as it takes only one adult female tick to cause tick paralysis/poisoning. Therefore, daily searching for and removal of any ticks found is recommended.
My pet has started chewing the collar, should I be worried?
In cases where dogs have chewed and swallowed all or part of a Seresto™ collar, veterinary attention is recommended. Mild stomach upsets (e.g. loose stools) have been reported, but have resolved within 24 hours. An explanation for Seresto™’s safety is that the active ingredients are bound within the collar matrix, limiting the amount of active ingredients available to be absorbed during passage through the gastrointestinal tract. However, it is recommended that you seek veterinary advice if part or all of the Seresto™ collar is swallowed. To prevent dogs from chewing on their own Seresto™ collar, ensure it is correctly fitted.
Is Seresto™ safe for puppies?
It’s safe for use on puppies from seven weeks of age.
My Seresto™ collar doesn’t smell at all. Does this mean it’s not working properly?
No, it doesn’t. Seresto™ is odourless, so there are none of the unpleasant chemical smells you usually associate with flea and tick collars.
